CREST-RESSACA

The Center for Research Excellence in Science and Technology at Texas A&M University-Kingsville fosters fundamental research and development for promoting the concepts of sustainability of ecological and environmental systems in the semi-arid coastal areas of South Texas and the border region. It promotes basic and applied research, technology development and transfer, research/education integration, and environmental education in both formal and informal domains. More ...

Ecological Engineering Restoration

An ecological engineering approach to shoreline stabilization was implemented at the approximately 150 foot stretch of eroding beach west of the two boat ramps at Kleberg County's Kaufer-Hubert Memorial Park and the structure was completed in May 2003. The shoreline restoration included a unique design incorporating natural fiber mats, a woven geotextile, and local stone and native plants to create a coastal area providing erosion protection, that blends with the natural surroundings, and provides ecological habitat along a low wave energy shoreline. The truth is that stormwaters pick up impurities from cities and housing developments and carry them into rivers, creeks, lakes and other bodies of water we drink and swim in. The purpose of the task force was to have A&M-Kingsville engineering researchers, led by Guerrero, assist the cities in putting together a regional stormwater management plan they could present to the TCEQ and use to earn the required permit.
